How to Choose and Customise a Resume Template

A resume template gives your experience a clean structure so a recruiter can scan it quickly. But the best template is the one that fits your role, industry and level of experience. Here is how to choose and customise one.

1. Match the layout to your industry

Creative roles can handle more colour and design. Finance, law, engineering and many corporate jobs usually prefer a simple, clean layout. When in doubt, choose clarity over decoration.

2. Think about experience level

  • First job or student: put education, projects and skills near the top.
  • Mid-career: lead with a short summary and recent achievements.
  • Senior roles: highlight leadership, results and key responsibilities.

3. Keep it readable

Use one or two fonts, consistent spacing and clear headings. Many employers use software to read resumes, so avoid text inside images and keep section titles standard, such as Experience, Education and Skills.

4. Customise for each application

Update your summary and key skills to reflect the job description. Use the same keywords the employer uses, but only where they honestly describe your experience.

5. Write results, not duties

Instead of listing tasks, describe what you achieved. Add numbers where you can, as long as they are accurate.

6. Proofread and export

Check spelling, dates and contact details. Save a PDF with a clear file name such as your name followed by the word resume.
